The Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (LGRB) has strengthened its collaboration with the Online Media Publishers Association (OMPA) in a renewed push to promote responsible gaming and improve public awareness across Uganda.

The engagement held earlier today, brought together officials from the gaming regulator and leaders in the digital media space with both sides agreeing on the urgent need to educate the public as the industry rapidly evolves.

Discussions highlighted how gaming in Uganda has expanded beyond traditional betting shops to include a fast-growing online segment driven by increased internet access and mobile phone usage.

This shift, stakeholders noted calls for more deliberate awareness campaigns that address both land-based and digital platforms.

“We are strengthening our partnership with OMPA not only to drive positive mindset change but also to collaboratively shape policies that support responsible gaming across all platforms,” said Adrine Otunga, the Manager Legal at LGRB.

Participants at the meeting emphasised the importance of coordinated efforts in building a well-informed gaming environment, particularly in tackling misinformation and encouraging responsible participation among users.

OMPA leadership welcomed the partnership, pledging to use its wide online reach to support the Board’s mandate through creative content and public education initiatives.

“We are ready to develop innovative ideas and content that advance responsible gaming,” said Giles Muhame, President of OMPA. “We will align our proposals with the Board’s mandate and ensure the public receives accurate and relevant information.”

The collaboration comes at a time when Uganda’s gaming sector is experiencing steady growth, raising concerns about consumer protection and the risks associated with excessive gaming.

LGRB has in recent years stepped up its regulatory role through licensing operators, monitoring compliance and conducting sensitisation campaigns aimed at minimising harm.

With this partnership, the Board hopes to tap into the influence of digital publishers to reach wider audiences, promote informed decision-making and reinforce a culture of responsible gaming across the country.
