Berlin, May 26, 2025 — The German government has strongly denied allegations by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) that its ambassador in Kampala is involved in supporting rebel activities, calling the accusations “absurd” and “without any merit.”
Speaking at a press conference in Berlin on Monday, a spokesperson for Germany’s foreign ministry Kathrin Deschauer, said the claims had no foundation and were categorically rejected.
“The accusations are absurd and without any merit and we reject them in the strongest terms,” Kathrin Deschauer stated firmly.
The remarks come in response to statements by UPDF officials over the weekend alleging that Germany’s ambassador in Uganda had provided covert support to groups opposed to the Ugandan government.
The UPDF did not offer concrete evidence to support their allegations, but claimed to have intelligence linking the envoy to rebel contacts.
In response, the German foreign ministry emphasized that there is no official military collaboration between Germany and Uganda that Ugandan military claims to have severed in the statement.
The diplomatic tension threatens to strain relations between the two nations, which have previously enjoyed relatively cordial ties focused on development aid and governance support.
German officials reiterated their commitment to peaceful engagement and mutual respect but warned against what they described as “politically motivated distractions.
